The Bone Carving masterpiece Flying Dragon was hand crafted by a team of 19 highly experienced Ivory Carving masters, lead by famous Canton Ivory Carving artist Michael Sui. It took them three years and six months in total. The Flying Dragon is their second masterpiece after the world’s first Ivory Carving surfaced automobile, the Ninety Nine Lucky Dragons (2007). It covers a BMW Z4 automobile gilded with 99.9% pure gold, mosaicked with millions of pieces of hand-carved Yak bones on top. The artwork is 5.2 meters long, 2.38 meters wide, 1.42 meters high, with a total weight of near 3 tons. It’s the first time ever that all different styles of Ivory Carving techniques have been applied and combined into one masterpiece.
The whole car, including the steering wheel, gear stick and dashboard, is covered by sophisticatedly designed Yak bone pieces. Every single piece of the Yak bones was hand craved with the best techniques. It’s not hard to feel the heart and soul that the artists dedicated into the artwork. The most amazing part is that looking from far, the whole car seems coiled by a big dragon with thousands of shinny feathers, each engraved with a paragraph of the Diamond Sutra; but in a close-up, there are 3999 different shapes of small dragons carved on the feathers which stand for blessings and wellbeing. The highest level of traditional Ivory Carving skills applied and the artistic yet meaningful design of the carved bone coat inject a strong flavor of Chinese traditional culture into this modern western vehicle. The chin bones of 30,000 Yaks were cut, polished and mosaicked onto the car’s exterior and interior. Dragon in Chinese history was the symbol of emperor. Therefore, the Flying Dragon was designed as the ride for the King. To echo with the royal theme, underneath the hand carved bone surface, the whole car is gilded with 1999 pieces of 99.9% pure gold plates, which acts as the golden armor worn by the emperors. The four claws of the big dragon are perfectly placed on the car’s four gold gilded wheels, which made the dragon look like riding on four fast spinning wheels of flame.
The Flying Dragon was bestowed with our dream for China’s rosy future and sustained growth. Such a design reflects Michael’s artistic conception which is that with the Dragon flying high in the sky, the world is blessed with peace and prosperity.
